Waiting for Goaldot

After 120 minutes playing time in the Argentina vs. Netherlands game, the score was 0 - 0.

Just sayin'.

And yet it was watched by more people around the planet than the superbowl, world series, Stanley cup and nba finals combined ever will. Just sayin'.

And we got to watch all 120 minutes in three interrupted chunks, rather than ads every other minute. Soccer is a sport for people with attention spans longer than two minutes.

I'd thought a fan if classical education would be able to appreciate that.

I'll take a break from the acrimony to say that you have nailed soccer on the head. It's a legitimate sport, and its players are legitimate athletes, but goddamn is it hard to watch.

Hey, you don't need to preach to me. My two boys played for years and my second son went to college on a soccer scholarship and was the captain of his college team.

I've seen more soccer than I care to think about. In fact, I even saw a goal scored once.

I do have philosophical sympathies with it, and I'm trying to like it.

Real hard.

I normally come on here to bait and even insult Singring, but, go Germany! Brazil has enough problems without the final insult of hated Argentina winning on Brazil's home field. Thank God we don't live in a country where the result of a game might influence elections.

Yes, in fact, I expected Singring, as a German, to make the argument that in the game immediately prior to Argentina v. Netherlands (Germany v. Brazil) was a high scoring game, since it was evidence against my point.

He may be slipping ...

You know me to well Martin, I actually deleted that part of my post because I didn't want to overwhelm you with the sheer force of my argument :-).

Seriously, though, this world cup has been one of the most entertaining and thrilling at least in my short memory, even from I neutral standpoint. I agree that the Netherlands Argentina game was a bit dull, but the other semi final made up four that

Glass to hear your sons got into the game, as with every sport it of course is more fun when you play it. I spent eight years in a local team in Germany and saw loads of goals - but unfortunately most of them scored against us. We sucked most of the time...

Anonymous... It seems that sport really can bring people together after all! ;-)

In the World Cup final, which was probably the most watched event in the history of the planet, it took nearly two hours before a single goal was scored. Grass grows faster. However, I will enjoy watching my son play in his 3rd-5th grade soccer league; I expect there will be considerably more goals scored.
