Thank you for responding to my question. ...Martin,
Thank you for responding to my question. I was referring to John Granger, who has written about the Harry Potter series, and his use of the two terms. (I haven't read his books, but two of my children have read some of them.) Incantational magic is the type you described. Invocational magic is calling up spirits. The characters in Harry Potter use the former type of magic. However, I have not heard the distinction you make here between incantational and invocational. Etymologically the first term means "insinging," and the second "incalling." But I'm not familiar with their usage. I would love to know if there is a history there.
<Martin Cothranhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16452612266051351726noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11542449.post-45568339813910693522016-03-03T11:05:48.138-05:002016-03-03T11:05:48.138-05:00Simplemusing:

I think the view of people who do believe that Tolkien and Lewis are problematic in this way are mistaken for the reason most people are mistaken about most mistaken beliefs: They don't make basic distinctions. I tried to outline here the distinctions they were not making.Martin Cothranhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16452612266051351726noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11542449.post-74914841175182299352016-03-03T09:36:33.455-05:002016-03-03T09:36:33.455-05:00What is your opinion of the Harry Potter series? ...What is your opinion of the Harry Potter series? I have read that it is incantational magic (fairy tale magic), but I've also been warned against it for its invocational magic. I have read the series and like it, but I was wondering what you thought of it. As far as I know the Bible makes out necromancy and witchcraft to be evil but why would it follow that you can't read fantasy about those things?
